Founded in 1976 by two unlikely Hollywood pioneers—Beirut-born Mario Kassar and Budapest-born Andrew Vajna—Carolco Pictures was the creation of outsiders who never played by the industry's rules. Neither man emerged from the traditional studio system, and that distance from Hollywood convention became Carolco's greatest strength. Fuelled by the global success of Sylvester Stallone's first turn as John Rambo in First Blood, Carolco exploded into one of the defining independent studios of the late 1980s and early 1990s. In the span of little more than a decade, Kassar and Vajna assembled an astonishing body of work that ranged effortlessly between groundbreaking spectacle and daring adult cinema.
They delivered the visionary science-fiction of Total Recall and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, the unsettling nightmare of Jacob's Ladder, the Southern Gothic intimacy of Rambling Rose, the erotic provocation of Basic Instinct, and the noir occultism of Angel Heart. Few studios—let alone one built by two immigrants operating outside Hollywood's inner circle—matched Carolco's willingness to gamble on singular filmmakers and uncompromising ideas.
Marking the 50th anniversary of Carolco's founding, and alongside KSc's 35th Anniversary revival of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, this series celebrates not only an extraordinary catalogue of films, but also the fearless spirit of Mario Kassar and Andrew Vajna. Their success proved Hollywood's most enduring classics could come from those who stood furthest from its establishment—a reminder of a time when bold personalities, conviction, and genuine risk-taking could still reshape the industry.
