A cinematic love letter to the machine that shaped modern filmmaking, Her Name Was Moviola explores film editing through Academy Award-winning editor Walter Murch. Invented in 1922, the Moviola became the dominant editing machine in English-language cinema for much of the 20th century. Murch and collaborators reconstruct a Moviola editing suite, revealing how individual shots become a cohesive cinematic language. Using two scenes from Mike Leigh’s Mr. Turner, reverse-engineered from digital files onto 35mm film, they demonstrate painstaking frame-by-frame editing craft. Part technical masterclass, part cinematic history, Her Name Was Moviola celebrates the craft at the heart of filmmaking.
