Film Details

Screening on VHS in Cinema 2.

A haunting, poignant coming-of-age story with a provocative twist, Barrio Triste taps into the anxieties of a youth culture on the margins of history, yearning to be understood. On the outskirts of Medellín, Colombia in the late 1980s, local residents report strange lights descending from the sky. When a reporter arrives to investigate, a ragtag group of teens from a lawless neighbourhood storm the scene and steal his camera. In the hands of its new owners, the device records a mesmerising plunge into their frantic existence. As the boys come to terms with their situation, the camera drifts through the neighbourhood to document the small details informing their lives. In the midst of darkness and despair, a glimmer of hope rises from an unexpected place. Meanwhile, enigmatic interviews reveal the internal hardships of the boys as they struggle for the words to express themselves. Are these internal monologues, echoes through time, or pleas from another dimension? Initially a document of despair until it builds to transcendent heights, this genre-busting debut upends the rough-and-tumble vernacular of lo-fi video with unmistakable lyrical mastery.
